List #78 - 5 ways to pack more efficiently

Over the past two years, I have been on an airplane at least once a month, every month. I consider myself a fairly experienced and expert packer. Here are my five packing tips that will serve your needs whether you’re going away for a weekend or a month.

  1. Try to not pack the night before

It sounds a little crazy, but I start packing a week in advance, even just for a weekend. It helps me finesses and narrow down what I actually need. And I always remember something else, so this gives ample time to add and subtract.

  2. Keep one or two purses/tote bags always packed and prepped

This is probably the best piece of advice for nervous and/or OCD packers like myself. I keep one carry-on tote bag and one purse packed with my “essentials”, and these two bags always remain the same. They essentially never get unpacked at all, and contain pouches with lotion, advil, electrolytes, etc. All I have to do is throw in my wallet/passport and I’m ready to go. They’re my travel “go-bags”.

  3. Use packing cubes

Seriously the best invention. They allow you to not only organize your things better, but they keep items condensed so you can fit more. As the trip progresses, I also see what I’ve worn and what hasn’t been touched, so there’s less laundry!

  4. Rely on mini versions of things

I know its not environmentally friendly, but I love a mini toothbrush kit. Just throwing it in and not worrying about undoing my entire vanity/bathroom situation makes it so much easier!

  5. Basics come first, then accessorize

This is especially true if you tend to overpack. Cramming in all your cute outfits may seem possible, but it can be overwhelming. Simplify first, then add the standout pieces you love, plus jewelry and shoes.
