List #87 - 5 ways to do a mental reset
I love the term “reset”, although I know it has some complicated implications. In my mind, it feels refreshing. It feels representative of how we can always start again and leave the past in the past, even if the past is small potatoes, relatively. I often find that I need separate types of resets at different times, although the patterns definitely cross over each other. For example, if I need a mental reset, exercise is always part of the process, as it is with a physical reset.
In recognizing that some people may just need one or the other, I thought it would be helpful to divide a single “reset day” into two posts, mental reset and physical reset, and you can mix the line items up as needed!
Exercise
This belongs in the physical reset post, obviously, but I add it here too because the mental benefits of exercise cannot be pronounced enough.
Make a single to-do list and use your Notes app
Here’s the thing. It’s pretty hard to get off your phone. I have found that writing my to-do list in my journal leads to me (often) forgetting things and, more likely, forgetting my journal when I need to remember it most! Therefore, I keep a single, running to-do list in my Notes app that gets refined every evening as part of my habit stack. Starting this list and refining it every night helps reset my mind for a new day, with new things to focus on. If you’re having a tough time staying organized, I recommend starting one fresh and keep editing every day.
Give something to someone else
Now, my love language is gifts so this is more personal for me. But even if your gift is an act of service, I can promise you this will make your headspace much more beautiful as well.
Give something to yourself that you need
Get fresh towels if yours feel really dingy. But new underwear. But make the “gift” somewhat practical. Its a mental trick I use to feel productive while still getting a “treat”.
Read a single article all the way though (NO SCROLL BREAKS)
I know this is asking a lot, but give your brain the exciting challenge of staying focused on reading a single article. Let yourself struggle through it. You’ll be proud.
